There are only a handful of holiday destinations that are really suitable for beach holidays in winter. Often times the temperatures are not all that warm, and many of the holiday attractions that are open during the summer months are closed during the winter season. Having said that, there are a few destinations that are within easy reach of the UK that offer great beach holidays during the winter months.
Below is a list of three winter beach holiday destinations that offer sun, sea and sand during those miserable months of the year:-
Lying just 1000km to the South of the Canary Islands these cluster of islands are soaked with sunshine 300 days of the year. The main holiday islands are Sal and Boa Vista. Located to the North East of the archipelago they are desert islands surrounded by crystal blue sea.
Temperatures during the winter months range from highs of 24 degrees Centigrade during January and February rising to 25 degrees centigrade in March. November is the warmest winter month with highs of 27 degrees Centigrade with December a little cooler. Night time temperatures drop to around 18 degrees during January and February. Sea temperatures are a pleasant 23 to 25 degrees during the winter months, making diving and snorkelling a popular activity. The winter months in Sal and Boa Vista are the driest with an average of 3 days rainfall per month.
Egypt makes it onto the list because as it has decent temperatures during the winter months and it is a relatively inexpensive place to take a winter holiday.
Temperatures during the winter months vary from between 22 degrees Centigrade during January and February to highs of 27 degrees in November. Temperatures drop to around 23 Degrees in December. The main difference between Egypt and Cape Verde is with the night time temperatures: Sharm El Sheikh experiences night time lows of 13 degrees, meaning many hotel rooms have their own central heating. Due to the low night time temperatures many hotels have heated swimming pools during winter.
The winter months are also the ‘rainy season’ in Sharm El Sheikh, well, so far as there can be a rainy season in the desert. It is during the winter months that Sharm El Sheikh gets their highest levels of rainfall: an average of 1.8mm per month! Sea temperatures are slightly cooler than Cape Verde ranging between 21 and 24 degrees Centigrade. However, if you are into diving and snorkelling these are usually the best times to visit as the water is at its clearest.
Kenya makes it onto our list (although it sits at the bottom for some specific reasons which i’ll get to later) because it is hot all year round and the best time to visit is actually during the winter months. Average temperatures remain in the high 20’s throughout the year, with the winter months reaching up to the low 30’s. Sea temperatures are a good deal warmer than Egypt and Cape Verde with winter temperatures around 28 degrees Centigrade, perfect for diving and snorkelling enthusiasts. The winter months are also the driest and least humid; so if you are looking for a true winter sunshine holiday without the oppressive heat of the tropics then head to Kenya around this time of year.
As I mentioned above there are a few downsides to taking a winter holiday in Kenya. Firstly, it is more expensive than the other destinations mentioned in this article; Secondly, it is in the tropics, which means that there are mosquitoes and Malaria. Anti-malarial medication will need to be taken before travelling which apart from increasing the cost of the holiday; you will need to plan a doctor’s visit well in advance of travel, making late deals a risky business. Finally, due to the Malaria risk, Kenya is not necessarily classed as a destination for families with very young children.
If however, you are willing to accept these challenges then holidays to Kenya in winter is almost guaranteed winter sunshine.
