There are only a handful of holiday destinations that are really suitable for beach holidays in winter. Often times the temperatures are not all that warm, and many of the holiday attractions that are open during the summer months are closed during the winter season. Having said that, there are a few destinations that are within easy reach of the UK that offer great beach holidays during the winter months.

Below is a list of three winter beach holiday destinations that offer sun, sea and sand during those miserable months of the year:-

The Cape Verde Islands.

Lying just 1000km to the South of the Canary Islands these cluster of islands are soaked with sunshine 300 days of the year. The main holiday islands are Sal and Boa Vista. Located to the North East of the archipelago they are desert islands surrounded by crystal blue sea.

Temperatures during the winter months range from highs of 24 degrees Centigrade during January and February rising to 25 degrees centigrade in March. November is the warmest winter month with highs of 27 degrees Centigrade with December a little cooler.  Night time temperatures drop to around 18 degrees during January and February. Sea temperatures are a pleasant 23 to 25 degrees during the winter months, making diving and snorkelling a popular activity. The winter months in Sal and Boa Vista are the driest with an average of 3 days rainfall per month.

Egypt: Sharm El Sheikh

Egypt makes it onto the list because as it has decent temperatures during the winter months and it is a relatively inexpensive place to take a winter holiday.

Temperatures during the winter months vary from between 22 degrees Centigrade during January and February to highs of 27 degrees in November. Temperatures drop to around 23 Degrees in December. The main difference between Egypt and Cape Verde is with the night time temperatures: Sharm El Sheikh experiences night time lows of 13 degrees, meaning many hotel rooms have their own central heating.  Due to the low night time temperatures many hotels have heated swimming pools during winter.

The winter months are also the ‘rainy season’ in Sharm El Sheikh, well, so far as there can be a rainy season in the desert. It is during the winter months that Sharm El Sheikh gets their highest levels of rainfall: an average of 1.8mm per month! Sea temperatures are slightly cooler than Cape Verde ranging between 21 and 24 degrees Centigrade. However, if you are into diving and snorkelling these are usually the best times to visit as the water is at its clearest.

Kenya.

Kenya makes it onto our list (although it sits at the bottom for some specific reasons which i’ll get to later) because it is hot all year round and the best time to visit is actually during the winter months.  Average temperatures remain in the high 20’s throughout the year, with the winter months reaching up to the low 30’s.  Sea temperatures are a good deal warmer than Egypt and Cape Verde with winter temperatures around 28 degrees Centigrade, perfect for diving and snorkelling enthusiasts. The winter months are also the driest and least humid; so if you are looking for a true winter sunshine holiday without the oppressive heat of the tropics then head to Kenya around this time of year.

As I mentioned above there are a few downsides to taking a winter holiday in Kenya. Firstly, it is more expensive than the other destinations mentioned in this article; Secondly, it is in the tropics, which means that there are mosquitoes and Malaria. Anti-malarial medication will need to be taken before travelling which apart from increasing the cost of the holiday; you will need to plan a doctor’s visit well in advance of travel, making late deals a risky business. Finally, due to the Malaria risk, Kenya is not necessarily classed as a destination for families with very young children.

If however, you are willing to accept these challenges then holidays to Kenya in winter is almost guaranteed winter sunshine.

Asperger’s syndrome is a developmental disability which affects the way affected individuals develop and view the world. Everybody who has Asperger’s syndrome is affected in their own unique way; however, children with Asperger’s syndrome will usually have several traits that similar to other children with Asperger’s syndrome. When diagnosis Asperger’s syndrome in children your physician will look at several aspects of the syndrome and assess how it applies to your child. Based on the findings, they will then send your child on for further diagnostic testing. The main traits that are usually seen in children with Asperger’s are found below:-

  1. Social Functioning Difficulties: Children with Asperger’s Syndrome find it hard to interact with other children. Such examples of social functioning difficulties include not getting on with other children in the group and preferring to play alone rather than with peers.
  2. Sensory problems:  This is another common problem among children with Asperger’s syndrome. Common sensory issues include sensitivity to light, sound and smells. In environments where these senses are in abundance can often cause behavioural meltdowns. Such environments include shopping malls and supermarkets.
  3. Obsessive focus on one topic or interest: Children with Asperger’s have the tendency to obsessively focus on one object, topic or interest. This is often at the expense of other object or interests and plays a big part in the social functioning difficulties mentioned in point
  4. Routines: Children with Asperger’s are often deeply unsettled when their usual routine is broken. Often times, children with Asperger’s will insist on a rigid routine. Again, this ties in with the obsessive tendencies mentioned in the point above.

When diagnosis Asperger’s syndrome physicians will look at all of the points above and see to what extent, if any, they apply to your child. Whilst there are no single tests to determine whether your child has Asperger’s syndrome, the outcome of the above factors will be an indication of whether further investigations will need to be carried out by specialists in Asperger’s syndrome.

Further Testing.

If the physician’s observations of the above four points indicates that your child may need further and more thorough investigation they will refer your child to a team of experts. This team will include psychologists, neurologists, physicians and other specialists. The aim of this investigation is to either confirm or exclude a diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome.  This investigation may take place over a period of time in a number of settings, for example, in your child’s school environment, in order to get the most accurate assessment of the child’s symptoms.

Self-Coping Strategies

Some children can be diagnosed as early as 2.5 years of age if the symptoms are particularly obvious. However, most children are diagnosed around 11 years of age. Due to the late diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome many children develop coping strategies that mask symptoms. For this reason, diagnosing Asperger’s Syndrome in older children becomes more difficult.

Diagnosing Asperger’s Syndrome in children involves a long process with a number of specialists. This approach is used to identify the severity of symptoms, as well as any strengths and weaknesses your child may have in order to decide what treatment and therapy would best suite your child.

Ever thought that crop circles were the work of artistic aliens? Well, maybe not any more. Researchers in Tazmania have discovered that Wallabies that feed on poppy plants get high.  The result? They go all loopy and hop around in circles until they come down from their opiate induced party. Stick that on your power cord!

They are not the only animals to take advantage of the free high either. Sheep have also been known to enter the Poppy fields and feed on the produce.

Australia is a larger producer of medicinal opiates used to make pain killers such as Codeine and Morphine. Nobody is entirely sure why they jump in circles, but hey, at least they can enjoy themselves while they do it.
